The difficulty ramps up quickly, with more aggressive enemies and faster reflexes required to dodge and counter their attacks. You need to beat the game at least once to unlock Hard (and again to unlock Non-Stop Infinite Climax, the hardest difficulty setting). The combat is very easy to pick up but hard to master, which is why only the Easy and Medium difficulties are available at first. This mechanic looks and feels very powerful, and makes the combat really enjoyable. The timing for dodging to trigger Witch Time is generally pretty generous, so it's common to slip in and out of slow motion when fighting a crowd of enemies.
